The Jōshin'etsu-Kōgen National Park ( Japanese 上 信 越高 原 国立 公園 , Jōshin'etsu-kōgen Kokuritsu Kōen ) is located in the Jōshin'etsu region and extends over the plateau of the same name ( Jōshin'etsu-kōgen ) in the Gunma , Niigata and Nagano prefectures . The national park is classified with the IUCN protection category II. The Japanese Ministry of Environment is responsible for the management of the national park.

On March 27, 2015, the southern part around the mountains Myōkō and Togakushi , which became part of the park in 1956, was spun off as an independent Myōkō-Togakushi-Renzan National Park with 39,772 hectares.

The park covers an area of ​​more than 148,194 hectares, in which some famous Japanese mountains and volcanoes are located. The highest mountains are the Asama (2568 m), Azumaya (2354 m), Kusatsu-Shirane (2160 m), Naeba (2145 m) and Tanigawa (1977 m). The Asama and the Kusatsu-Shirane are active volcanoes.

Flora and fauna

The dense forests, raised bogs and lakes of the Jōshin'etsu-Kōgen National Park provide a habitat for a multitude of animal and plant species.
