Kariwa ( Japanese 刈 羽 村 , - mura ) is a village community in the district of Kariwa in the interior of the Niigata Prefecture on Honshū , the main island of Japan .

geography

The municipality of Kariwa is characterized by the unusual shape of its municipality. This consists of two separate parts. The western part, where most of the population lives, has been an enclave in Kashiwazaki since Nishiyama was incorporated into Kashiwazaki in 2005 . The Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant is located in the far west of the municipality on the Sea of Japan . The 50-100 m wide coastline also belongs to Kashiwazaki, so that the municipality has no access to the sea. About one and a half kilometers away from this western part is an exclave of the municipality with the districts Aburaden ( 油田 ) and Kurokawa ( 黒 川 ) on the border between Kashiwazaki and Nagaoka .

history

The current community was created on April 1, 1901 from the amalgamation of the old community Kariwa with Katsuyama ( 勝 山村 , -mura ) and parts of Tōjō ( 東城 村 , -mura ). On September 30, 1956, the incorporation of parts of Nakadōri ( 中-村 , -mura ) and on April 10, 1959 of parts of Futada ( 二 田村 , -mura ) followed. Since the incorporation of Nishiyama and Takayanagi into Kashiwazaki, Kariwa has been the only community in its district of the same name.

On July 16, 2007, the Niigata Chūetsu coastal earthquake in 2007 hit Kariwa and the neighboring town of Kashiwazaki.
