Tsubame ( Japanese 燕 市 , -shi ) is a city in the interior of Niigata Prefecture on Honshū , the main island of Japan .

Tsubame is south of Niigata and north of Nagaoka .

history

The city of Tsubame was created on March 31, 1954 by merging the small town ( Machi ) Tsubame with the surrounding villages ( Mura ) Matsunaga ( 松 長 村 ), Konakagawa ( 小 中 川村 ) and Koike ( 小池 村 ). On March 20, 2006, Yoshida- machi was united with Tsubame.
