Koganei Yoshikiyo ( Japanese 小 金井 良 精 ; born January 17, 1859 in Nagaoka ( Echigo Province ); died October 16, 1944 in Tōkyō ) was a Japanese medic and anthropologist.

Live and act

Koganei Yoshikiyo was born the son of Koganei Yoshimichi (小 金井 良 達), Samurai of the Nagaoka-Han. He graduated from the Medical Faculty of Tōkyō University in 1880 , where he had been taught anatomy by Wilhelm Schultze . He then went to Germany for five years to continue his education at the Friedrich Wilhelms University . One of his teachers there was Wilhelm von Waldeyer-Hartz , who made him his assistant. After his return in 1885, he was initially a lecturer at his alma mater. In 1886 he became the first anatomy professor in Japan.

Koganei studied the anatomy and bone structure of the Ainu and published his results from 1904 to 1905 as "Research on the Ainu" (ア イ ヌ 族 の 研究, Ainu-zoku no kenkyū). He had concluded that the Ainu were the Stone Age population of Japan.

Koganei was a member of various anthropological societies at home and abroad.
