Helmut Schröer (born November 23, 1942 in Cologne ) is a German politician ( CDU ) and was Lord Mayor of Trier from April 1989 to March 2007 .

Life

Schröer attended the Albertus Magnus Gymnasium in Cologne. Until 1965 he was an active player at the football club SC West in Cologne-Neuehrenfeld and also played against Wolfgang Overath and Jean Löring from Fortuna Cologne in his youth. After studying economics and German from 1962 to 1967 in Cologne, Schröer came to Trier as a trainee lawyer at the vocational school for economics . The CDU Rheinland-Pfalz local group Manderscheid came Schröer at the 1966th Three years later, in 1969, he was elected to the local council and to the Bernkastel-Wittlich district council until he moved to Trier . After his legal clerkship, Schröer got a permanent position in Trier, then in 1975 a position at the study seminar as head of business administration and German studies. In the following years he worked as head of economic affairs (1977–1989), alderman (1977–1987) and mayor (1987–1989) for the city of Trier and was sworn in as lord mayor on March 30, 1989 . On September 27, 1998, he was confirmed in office for a further eight years, for the first time by direct election. Schröer did not stand for election on September 24, 2006. From October 2007 Schröer took over the chairmanship of the Friends of Trier University. Since the 2007/2008 winter semester, he has been teaching at the University of Trier (Department IV, Chair for Environmental and Communal Economics). In addition, since summer 2007 he has been a training ambassador for the Chamber of Crafts and the Trier District Craftsmen's Association. Schröer has been chairman of the board of trustees of the St Matthias Foundation in Trier since 2007.

Publications

In 2009 he published the first volume of the book "Trier Weichenstellen"; a contribution to the recent city history. The 2nd volume of the “Trier course settings” was presented in October 2011. It deals with the development of Trier city center from 1970 to 2007, especially the Trier squares. In September 2012, the Trier-Weimar partnership turned 25. Schröer wrote a book with the Trier journalist Dieter Lintz about this German city partnership with the title: "Trier-Weimar: A German city partnership". In October 2016 his book “Trier Stories” was published. The 2nd volume of "Trier Stories" was presented in September 2018.
