Franz Damian Görtz

Franz Damian Görtz (born February 2, 1788 in Oberwesel ; † February 2, 1865 in Trier ) was district administrator of the Merzig district from 1829 to 1840 and mayor and district administrator in Trier from 1841 to 1848.

Görtz was a son of the deputy of the Obererzstiftes Johann Theodor Görtz and his wife Ludovika, b. Doctor He was first taught by a private tutor. He attended the grammar school in Münstermaifeld and from 1803 graduated from the grammar school in Aschaffenburg . From 1804 to 1807, he studied in Würzburg and Heidelberg law . From July to August 1818, after the death of Jakob Staadt, he was commissioned to manage the Saarburg district . In 1829 he became district administrator in Merzig , ten years later district administrator of the Trier district. At the same time he became the acting mayor of Trier. Görtz was unpopular with the population because of his pro-Prussian attitude. During the revolution of 1848 an attack was carried out on his house on the night of April 8th. The panes were thrown in and Görtz fled through the garden. After this attack, he submitted an application for leave of absence that ended with his retirement that same year. A later return to office was excluded, citing his advanced age.

Görtz, who with Anna Maria Antonia, geb. Cardon was married and is buried in the Trier main cemetery; the grave on the southern outer wall of the cemetery has been preserved.
