Franz Weissebach
Peter Franz Weißebach (born July 18, 1860 in Trier ; † November 10, 1925 there ) was a German privateer , co-owner of the Kanzemer Berg winery (today: Othegraven winery ), a Trier rogue and founder of the Trier palace gardens . The Franz Weißebach Prize is named after him.
Life
Weißebach was the son of the winery owner Julius Weißebach and his wife Anna Maria Schoemann. His aunt was Anna Weißebach . Weißebach was a co-owner of his parents' winery Kanzemer Berg, which was continued as the "Weißebach Erben" winery, and was a privateer because his brother Karl managed the joint winery.
During Weißebach's lifetime, the city of Trier showed an interest in converting the former parade ground at the Electoral Palace near the center into a garden, but the city lacked the money. Weißebach then made the city of Trier his heiress in his will. However, the rogue bequeathed his assets with earmarking: The money from the sale was to be used for the construction of a crematorium in the city cemetery, which was unthinkable in the strictly Catholic Trier of that time (see " Cremation "). The only way out was an additional provision in the will: Should the Trier city council refuse to build the crematorium for five years, the funds could be used for a public garden. The city council put the construction of the crematorium on its agenda every year for five years and, just as predictably, voted against it every year in the so-called “crematorium debate”. After the last refusal, the assets could finally be used to create the palace garden. The Weißebach estate contained three loads (around 1,000 liters each) of his wine "Kanzemer Berg", the 1921 vintage known as the "century wine" because of its outstanding quality. called.
In his will, Weißebach had specified an earth burial for himself , which took place in an honorary grave of the grateful city of Trier at the Trier main cemetery . In the city wall in the palace garden, a memorial plaque was attached to the donor.
