Josef Peter Mertes

Josef Peter Mertes (born March 18, 1946 in Trier ) is a German politician ( SPD ).

Life

After graduating from high school, Mertes studied education . After graduating in 1973, he became a teacher and head of a special school . He sat first in the city council and in the district council and then from 1991 to 2000 in the state parliament of Rhineland-Palatinate . From December 2000 to September 2011 he was President of the Supervision and Services Directorate in Trier . As a result, he resigned his state parliament mandate. Nevertheless, he ran again in the 2001 state election . Although he won the direct mandate in the constituency of Trier / Schweich , he did not accept it. Since 2009 Mertes is also Chairman of the University Council of the University of Trier . In the same year he became an honorary citizen of Opole .
