The Vermilion River (also known as the Big Vermilion River ) is a right tributary of the Wabash River in the US states of Illinois and Indiana . The river is 46 km long and drains an area of ​​3706 km² (of which 3,353 km² in Illinois and 353 km² in Indiana).

The Vermilion River arises at the confluence of the Salt Fork (right) and Middle Fork Vermilion River (left) west of the city of Danville in Vermilion County , Illinois. It flows in an easterly direction past Danville, where the North Fork Vermilion River joins the river from the north. The Vermilion River turns southeast and crosses the Indiana border. It flows about 20 kilometers through Vermillion County in Indiana, passes the village of Cayuga and flows into the Wabash River 55 km north of Terre Haute .

At Eugene , the river is spanned by the Eugene Covered Bridge ( Burr Truss construction, built in 1873, closed to traffic since 1974).
