Middle Fork Vermilion River in the Kickapoo State Recreation Area

The Middle Fork Vermilion River is the left headwaters of the Vermilion River in the US state of Illinois . The river is 124 km long.

The Middle Fork Vermilion River emerges in Ford County southeast of Paxton . It flows through Vermilion County in a predominantly south-easterly direction. The towns of Armstrong and Potomac are on the river. Later, the Middle Fork Vermilion River turns south. West of Danville , the Middle Fork Vermilion River finally joins the Salt Fork coming from the west to form the Vermilion River. The last kilometers of the river are in the Kickapoo State Recreation Area . From the headwaters of the Middle Fork Vermilion River, the Illinois River of the same name - Vermilion River tributary flows in the opposite direction to the northwest.

Along the course of the river, in addition to the Kickapoo State Recreation Area, there are also the nature reserves and recreation areas Middle Fork River Forest Preserve , Middle Fork State Fish and Wildlife Area , Horseshoe Bottom Nature Preserve and Windfall Prairie Nature Preserve . The river section from Mile 46.9 near Collison downstream to Mile 29.8 at the Conrail Railway Bridge north of US Highway 150 bears the status of a National Wild and Scenic River (in the scenic category ) for a distance of 27 kilometers .
