Paxton is a small town and administrative headquarters of the Ford County in eastern US -amerikanischen state of Illinois . In 2000 Paxton had 4525 inhabitants.

Paxton is located on the Vermillion River , a tributary of the Wabash River which flows into the Ohio River .
US Highway 45 runs through Paxton and is intersected by Illinois State Route 9 in downtown . On the western outskirts of the city runs Interstate 57 , which is the shortest connection from Chicago (176 km in a north-northeast direction) to Memphis, Tennessee (684 km in a south-southwest direction).
The nearest cities are Bloomington (81 km west), Champaign (44.6 km south), Lafayette in neighboring Indiana (107 km east), and Kankakee (81.6 km north-northwest).
By Paxton also a main line of the leading Canadian National Railway belonging Illinois Central Railroad .
history
A first settlement in the area was the Prairie City , which was already known in the late 1840s . In 1855, the place was renamed Prospect City by a senior officer on the Illinois Central Railroad .
In 1859 the city was named after the architect of London's Crystal Palace , Joseph Paxton . Paxton was also a major shareholder in the Illinois Central Railroad, which in 1856 maintained what was then the world's longest railway line from Chicago to Cairo . It is said about Paxton that he wanted to promote the settlement of the place with immigrants from England . However, that never happened, but the actual founding of the city has been linked to the work of Paxton ever since, so that the city of Paxton celebrated the 150th anniversary of its existence in 2009.
The Augustana College , an educational institution of Swedish immigrants, had from 1863 to 1875 based in Paxton.
On June 22, 1919, the former President William Howard Taft visited the city and gave a speech in which he spoke out in favor of the United States joining the newly formed League of Nations . A microfilm excerpt from this speech is available today at the Paxton Carnegie Library.

In the 2000 census, the population was 4,525. These were distributed over 1,776 households in 1,198 families. The population density was 792.6 / km². There were 1,876 residential buildings, which corresponded to a building density of 328.6 / km².

The median income per household was $ 37,804 and the median family income was $ 44,256. The median income for men was $ 31,140 that for women was $ 23,555. The per capita income was $ 18,617. Around 4.2% of families and 4.8% of the total population had their income below the poverty line .
