The Salamonie River has its source in Jay County in eastern Indiana, not far from the Ohio border . It flows in a predominantly west-northwest direction. At the lower reaches, about 5 km above the mouth, the river is dammed up from the Salamonie Dam, built in 1966, to the Salamonie Lake . The dam is used to regulate runoff and protect against flooding. Finally the Salamonie River flows into the Wabash River at Lagro .

The following protected and recreation areas are located on the shores of Salamonie Lake: Mt. Etna State Recreation Area , Lost Bridge State Recreation Area , Mt. Hope State Recreation Area , Dora New Holland State Recreation Area . Just before the estuary, the Salamonie River State Forest stretches along the lower reaches.
