Dragon Lyrefish (Draconettidae) are a family of small perch-related fish that live in tropical and subtropical regions of the Atlantic, Indian Ocean and Pacific (Japan to Hawaii) on the continental shelf and the peaks of submarine mountains. The fish are bottom dwellers and are relatively rare.
features
Dragon lyrefish are seven to twelve centimeters long, depending on the species. There are two nostrils on each side of the head. The gill opening is relatively large. A straight, strong spine is located on two bones of the gill cover (operculare and suboperculare), none on the preoperculare . Post-temporal and basic phenoid (two bones of the skull) are present. One nasal bone is missing. The sideline is only well developed on the head, rudimentary on the trunk or in a depression. Two different hypural bones connect the last vertebrae and the caudal fin.
