Charles V. Eskridge

Charles Vernon Eskridge (born January 20, 1833 in Virginia , †  July 15, 1900 in Emporia , Kansas ) was an American politician . Between 1869 and 1871 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Kansas.

Career

Charles Eskridge first came to Ohio with his parents and then to Lewiston , Illinois . At the age of 13 he started his own business and earned his living through various jobs. He went to St. Louis and worked for some time as a ship steward on a river steamer on the Mississippi . In 1855 he came to the Kansas Territory , which was ravaged by bloody clashes between supporters and opponents of slavery . There he worked in the newspaper business. He became a member of the Republican Party and took an active part in the clashes on the side of the opponents of slavery. He later settled in Emporia, where he worked in a shop. In 1859 he was also a probate judge there. After the founding of the state of Kansas, he was elected to the state legislature. In 1863 he was appointed to the governor's staff . A year later he became a member of the Kansas Senate .

In 1868, Eskridge was elected Lieutenant Governor of Kansas alongside James Madison Harvey . He held this office between January 11, 1869 and January 9, 1871. He was Deputy Governor. In 1872 he unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination for gubernatorial elections. Later he was a member of the municipal council of Emporia and again the state legislature. Eskridge worked to improve the school system in his state. He also worked in retail and the real estate industry. He also worked in the newspaper business. Among other things, he became the owner and editor of the Emporia Republican newspaper . Charles Eskridge died on July 15, 1900 in Emporia.
