Dennis Sidney González (born August 15, 1954 in Abilene , Texas ) is an American trumpeter of post bop , avant-garde jazz and free jazz, as well as a writer and music teacher.

Live and act

González learned the trumpet in his youth and came to Dallas , Texas in 1977 . He worked for radio stations and with his own formations, with which he recorded during his career for smaller jazz labels such as Silkheart , Brut , Clean Feed , Koch Jazz and 8th Harmonic Breakdown . In the late 1970s, he also founded the Dallas Association for Avant-Garde and Neo Impressionistic Music, or daagnim for short, and the record label of the same name.

González's main instrument is the trumpet; he also plays drums, flute, synthesizer and baritone saxophone. González has now released 28 albums under his own name, with guest musicians such as John Purcell , Andrew Cyrille and Malachi Favors , among others . In 1987 he recorded the album Catechism in London with the English free jazz musicians Elton Dean , Keith Tippett , Louis Moholo and Paul Rogers . In 1993 he recorded the album Welcome to Us for the Polish Gowi label with the formation "The Nordic Wizard Band" with Scandinavian musicians such as Bugge Wesseltoft , Nils Petter Molvær and Sidsel Endresen .

González is stylistically and conceptually reminiscent of Don Cherry and Tomasz Stańko . Richard Cook and Brian Morton note in The Penguin Guide to Jazz of González's greatest achievements, having lured saxophonist Charles Brackeen out of his temporary retreat in 1987 . González also made sure that bassist Henry Grimes returned to the recording studio when he recorded the album Nile River Suite with him in November 2003 .
