Software Engineering Radio (also called SE-Radio for short ) is an English-language audio podcast on software development topics .

History, format and distribution

SE-Radio was founded in January 2006 by Markus Völter , who works freelance in the field of software technology and engineering.

The articles are between 40 and 60 minutes long and appear every 10 days. All content of the podcast is freely available under the Creative Commons 2.5 license CC-BY-NC-ND. From 2008, all audio articles were provided with transcriptions. On June 6, 2008, the hundredth episode appeared. According to its own information, SE-Radio had around 8,000 subscribers in November 2006, almost a year after it was founded. A third of these listeners came from Germany.

At the beginning of 2012, SE-Radio was taken over by IEEE Software , where over 180 episodes are now offered under a CC license. The podcast, popular with over 5 million downloads, is to be continued. Since then, Völter has concentrated on the science and technology podcast omega tau .

Topics and guests

SE-Radio is predominantly technically oriented and is aimed specifically at software developers and software architects. In addition to basic technical topics such as strategies for error handling , multi-part episodes on more complex subject blocks from the areas of agility, model-based software development or SOA are also produced.

An SE radio episode often includes an interview with a well-known IT expert. Among the well-known guests in the software development scene were a. Grady Booch , Tom DeMarco , Joe Armstrong , Robert C. Martin , Scott Meyers Rebecca Wirfs-Brock , Erich Gamma , Doug Schmidt, Gregor Kiczales and Guy L. Steele Jr .
