Alvin Fielder (born November 23, 1935 in Meridian (Mississippi) - † January 5, 2019 ) was an American jazz musician ( drums ).

Alvin Fielder comes from a musical family; his brother William taught jazz at Rutgers University . His career began in 1948 in the local band of Duke Oatis. He later studied percussion with Ed Blackwell and also pharmacy . Mid and late 1950s, worked in Houston in rhythm and blues -Bands of Lowell Fulson , Amos Milburn and Eddie "Clean Head" Vinson . From 1959 to 1969 he worked as a studio musician for Duke Records in Chicago; In addition, he was a member of Sun Ra Arkestra in 1960/61 and was one of the founding members of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). He played u. a. with Muhal Richard Abrams , Eddie Harris , Roscoe Mitchell , Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre and Fred Anderson . In 1968 he returned to his home country and took over the management of his family's pharmacy.

In the 1970s, Fielder played with local bands in Atlanta and Dallas and recorded several albums with the Improvisational Arts Quintet , where he played with Kidd Jordan , Kent Jordan , Clyde Kerr and Elton Heron. Fielder was active in the Black Arts Music Society (BAMS) and performed primarily in Mississippi, u. a. with Muhal Richard Abrams, Alvin Batiste , Ron Brown , Betty Carter , Teddy Edwards , Malachi Favors , Dexter Gordon , Johnny Griffin , The Heath Brothers , Billy Higgins , Joseph Jarman , Clifford Jordan , Oliver Lake , Mulgrew Miller , Woody Shaw , Henry Threadgill , Freddie Waits and Cassandra Wilson . Fielder was a regular guest at the annual New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival from 1975 to 2008 . In the 1980s he also made guest appearances at numerous festivals in Europe; In 1991 he played at the Festival International de Louisiane . He was also known for his nightly sessions at Club Constellation after the Chicago Jazz Festival .

In 1987 Fielder recorded an album with Ahmed Abdullah , Charles Brackeen and Dennis González ; in the 1990s he played in improv ensembles with Joel Futterman , Kidd Jordan and others. In 2002 he toured with Andrew Lamb and in 2007 recorded his first album under his own name, A Measure of Vision . In 2017 he presented The Shape Finds Its Own Space (FMR, with Frode Gjerstad , Damon Smith ); 2018 the duo album Song for Chico (BPA) with Damon Smith . In the field of jazz he was involved in 35 recording sessions between 1958 and 2017.
