Amos Milburn

Amos Milburn (born April 1, 1927 in Houston , Texas ; † January 3, 1980 ibid) was an American boogie pianist and singer who was particularly successful around 1950. He is considered a pioneer of rock 'n' roll and influenced numerous musicians, above all Fats Domino .

biography

Born in Houston as one of 13 siblings, Milburn was already playing the piano at the age of 5. After his military service during World War II , for which he signed up when he was 15, he performed in Houston with a 16-member band. In 1946 he made his first recordings in Los Angeles . In 1949 "Hold Me Baby", "Bewildered" and "Chicken Shack Boogie" were his first major hits in the R&B charts .

Milburn became one of the hottest musicians in Los Angeles. His greatest successes include a. "One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer", "Bad, Bad, Whiskey", "Thinking and Drinking" and "Trouble in Mind". He went on tour, first with his band and later solo. At times he accompanied the blues musician Charles Brown .

In 1956 Milburn returned to Houston, but success waned. Nevertheless, he remained active in the music business. In 1960 he brought out the swinging Christmas album Christmas (Comes but Once a Year) . 1962 appeared new recordings of his old hits, in which Stevie Wonder also took part.

In 1972 Milburn made his last recording with Johnny Otis . Since his left side was paralyzed after a stroke, Otis had to play his left hand on the piano for him. His leg was amputated after a second stroke. A little later, Amos Milburn died in 1980 after a third stroke at the age of 52.

In 2010 he was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame of the Blues Foundation .
