The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (also known as Jazz Fest for short ) is an annual festival in New Orleans that celebrates the music and culture of the city and Louisiana, especially jazz . It takes place on the weekends (Friday to Sunday) of the last April and first week of May.

One of the main stages (Acura Stage) 2006

Currently (2012) it takes place on the Fair Grounds Race Course (a horse racing track). But there are also many events taking place in the rest of central New Orleans.

Alongside Mardi Gras, it is a main tourist attraction and has the character of a folk festival. In addition to jazz, Cajun music , bluegrass , rhythm & blues , zydeco , gospel, blues, rap, country, Afro-Caribbean folklore, Latin music, rock and other local music styles are also presented. There are 12 main stages. There are also tents for children, information and culinary delights (Cajun cuisine).

It has been held since 1970, then in Congo Square in Louis Armstrong Park, and organized by George Wein on behalf of the New Orleans Hotel Owners Association, which started the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation , which owns the festival. At the suggestion of curator Dick Allen , Wein was supported by Allison Miner (1949–1995) and Quint Davis (* 1947) from the Tulane University Jazz Archives , who hired original musicians in black clubs in the city and street musicians (instead of in the tourist centers such as Bourbon Street ). Both later play a key role in the organization. Miner founded the Archives of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation. Quint Davis, who was a student at the time and dropped out of his studies after Wein's inquiry and became a producer, is now (2012) the CEO of the festival company.
