Flying Fish Records

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Flying Fish Records is a blues - and country - label from Chicago . It was founded in 1974 by Bruce Kaplan, former chairman of the Folklore Society at the University of Chicago.

history

The label was very important as it brought the blues to a larger audience, while most of the labels that were releasing the blues at the time were aimed at a small circle of insiders. Kaplan took advantage of the niche between the hits-based promotion efforts of the big labels and the attitude of the independent companies that the music will find its buyer.

Kaplan passed away unexpectedly in December 1992. Long time employee of the company, Jim Netter, and his widow Sandra Shifrin ran the company for a short time, but it was soon sold to Rounder Records .

Flying Fish Records also sells Blind Pig Records and Rooster Blues.
