Big Twist and the Mellow Fellows

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Big Twist and the Mellow Fellows were an American blues and rhythm and blues group.

Your front man was the singer and harmonica player Larry "Big Twist" Nolan (born September 23, 1937, Terra Haute , Indiana † March 14, 1990, Broadview , Illinois ). He began singing in church at the age of six. Then he sang in a bar band, everything from rhythm & blues, blues to country music. In the early 1970s he appeared with guitarist Pete Special and tenor saxophonist Terry Ogolini, called Big Twist & The Mellow Fellows. They were founded in Carbondale, Illinois, and only came to Chicago in 1978. Over the course of the decade, this group gained a loyal following and moved from private parties to the big stages. Their repertoire was a mix of soul , rhythm and blues , blues and rock , a mix that was popular with young and old alike.

They recorded albums for Flying Fish Records and Alligator Records . Larry Nolan died of a heart attack in March 1990, but the group continued to play with new singer Martin Allbritton , who had performed with the band before Nolan's death. Saxophonist and producer Gene "Daddy G" Barge has often appeared as a guest singer. After founding member Peter Special left the band, they renamed themselves "Chicago Rhythm And Blues Kings" and are still a popular band in Illinois today.
