Aaron Novik (born July 21, 1974 ) is an American jazz musician ( bass clarinet , clarinet , composition ), who also excelled as a book illustrator.

Live and act

From the 2000s Novik worked in the Bay Area Improv Scene in the San Francisco area a. a. in the formations Gubbish (Album Notations in Tonations , 2004), Kipple ( Flashes of Irrational Happiness (2006), among others with Ches Smith and Lisa Mezzacappa ) and in the Nathan Clevenger Group, with which two albums were created in the early 2010s. During this time he founded the Edmund Welles quartet (album Tooth & Claw , 2008) with bass clarinetist Cornelius Boots, Jeff Anderle and Jonathan Russell .

Under his own name, Novik recorded the album The Samuel Suite / Dancing Into One in 2006 , which contained his own compositions; Yiddiots (2006) and Floating World Vol. 1 (Porto Franco Records, 2011) followed in 2006 , with guest musicians such as Carla Kihlstedt . In 2012 Novik published the Klezmer album Secrets of Secrets with Tzadik , the compositions of which were inspired by the writings of the mystic Eleazar ben Juda ben Kalonymos . The participating musicians included Carla Kihlstedt, Fred Frith and Ben Goldberg . 2013 Our Band Could Be as Serious as Your Life was released in MP3 format .

Novik's compositional work is influenced by klezmer and Balkan music as well as chamber music minimalism , heavy metal , tropicalismo and independent rock . His composition “Dante Counterstamp” was performed in 2017 by the Frowny Frown formation (Kristin Slipp, Amirtha Kidambi , Ches Smith , Shayna Dunkleman , Trevor Dunn , Michael Coleman , Ava Mendoza ).
