Phillip Greenlief

Phillip Greenlief (born February 14, 1959 in Los Angeles ) is an American jazz saxophonist, composer and music producer.

Greenlief played the trumpet and guitar as a child before switching to the saxophone in the mid-1970s. He studied at various West Coast music schools and earned a bachelor's degree in music education and a master's degree in 20th century literature from the University of Southern California . He directs musical education at San Francisco Waldorf High School and teaches saxophone, composition, and improvisation at the Oakland School for the Arts and the East Bay Center for the Performing Arts .

Since 1982 Greenlief has appeared as a soloist at jazz festivals in the USA and Europe, for example at the North Sea Jazz Festival , the Zelt-Musik-Festival or the Nickelsdorfer Konfrontationen . In 1998 he lived in Saint Petersburg , where he performed and recorded with the singer-songwriter Jelena Kolokolnikowa and the Dubinuschka folk ensemble . In addition to his work as a soloist, he is active in duo formations with Karen Fox , Biggi Vinkeloe , David Boyce , Jorrit Dijkstra , Joëlle Léandre , Gust Burns , Andreas Willers and Cory Wright . He has performed with the groups shudder (with Kyle Bruckmann and Lance Grabmiller ), Citta di Vitti (with Lisa Mezzacappa and Jason Levis ), Bush of Ghosts (with Jen Baker and Damon Smith ) and the 2 + 2 Project (with Jon Raskin ) and is a founding member of The Lost Trio .

He also founded the Evander Music label in 1995 , which publishes contemporary compositions, improvisational music and modern jazz. He developed the idea for its establishment after getting to know the multi-instrumentalist Vinny Golia and his 9 Winds label. Currently (2018) he is a guest lecturer at the University of Music and Dance Cologne .

In addition to works for solo saxophone, clarinet duo, saxophone quartet and larger jazz ensembles, Greenlief also composed plays, ballet and film music.

After a few years in Vancouver , Greenlief returned to the Bay Area in 1993 to study at the University of Southern California. He has lived in Oakland for over 20 years .
