Julio Ruelas

Julio Ruelas (born June 21, 1870 in Fresnillo / Zacatecas , † September 16, 1907 in Paris ) was a Mexican painter and graphic artist .

biography

Ruelas studied painting from 1887 at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes in Mexico City and then as a scholarship holder from 1891 at the Gdansk Art Academy . Here he met Arnold Böcklin , who influenced him greatly in his painting. After his return to Mexico City in 1895, he frequented the circles of artists and intellectuals and in 1898 co-founded the magazine Revista Moderna . In 1904 he went to Paris on a grant from the French government , where he learned graphic arts in Marie Cazin’s studio and lived and worked until his death. Many of his pictures and etchings, the content of which were mainly death, love, oppression, fear and despair, illustrated the Revista Moderna between 1903 and 1911 .
