The department is located in the south of the country and borders Nigeria . It consists of the town of Maradi , the township of Madarounfa, and the rural parishes of Dan-Issa , Djiratawa , Gabi , Safo and Sarkin Yamma . The eponymous capital of the department is Madarounfa.

history

The area of ​​the department originally belonged to the arrondissement of Maradi, in which Madarounfa had the status of an administrative post ( poste administratif ). The arrondissement of Maradi was dissolved on February 17, 1972 and its area was divided into the new arrondissements of Madarounfa and Guidan Roumdji .

In 1998 the previous Arrondissements of Nigers were converted into departments, each headed by a prefect appointed by the Council of Ministers. The department has been divided into municipalities since 2002. Before that, it consisted of the urban centers Madarounfa and Maradi and the cantons of Madarounfa, Djirataoua, Gabi, Safo and Sarkin Yama.

According to the 2012 census, the Madarounfa department has 716,112 inhabitants, including 267,249 in the city of Maradi. In the 2001 census it was 439,431 inhabitants, in the 1988 census 304,192 inhabitants and in the 1977 census 188,145 inhabitants.
