Gabi is a rural municipality in the department Madarounfa in Niger .

geography

Gabi is located in the greater Sudan landscape and borders the neighboring state of Nigeria in the south . The neighboring communities in Niger are Safo in the northwest and Madarounfa in the northeast. The municipality is divided into 78 administrative villages, 43 hamlets and a camp. The main town of the rural community is the administrative village of Gabi.

With the Goulbi de Gabi and the Goulbi de Madarounfa, two dry valleys cut through the municipality in a north-south direction. The average annual rainfall in Gabi is 601 millimeters, the number of rainy days in the year an average of 39 (measurement period 1995-2006). The Forêt classée de Gabi Nord with 560 hectares and the Forêt classée de Gabi Sud with 400 hectares are two protected forest areas in the municipal area of ​​Gabi. It was placed under protection in 1950. From 1972 to 2005, the proportion of more or less forested shrub savannah in the municipality fell by 20%, while the agricultural area grew by 9%.

history

Gabi was founded in the 19th century by residents of the city of Maradi . One of the first customs posts between the then French Niger and the then British Nigeria was set up in 1914 on behalf of the Governor General William Ponty in the Gabi village of Tchidafawa. The French colonial administration raised Gabi to a canton in 1944 . In 2002, as part of a state-wide administrative reform, the canton Gabi became the rural municipality of Gabi.

At the 2001 census, Gabi had 56,547 inhabitants. At the 2012 census, the population was 83,203. The population is predominantly home- speaking . There are Fulani and Tuareg minorities in the community.

Economy and Infrastructure

The valleys in Gabi are among the regions with the best soil fertility in Niger. In addition to agriculture, cross-border informal trade with Nigeria is an important source of income for the population. The three markets in the rural parish are located in the administrative villages of Gabi, Chirgué and Dan Taro.
