Djiratawa (also: Djirataoua ) is a rural community in the Madarounfa department in Niger .

geography

Djiratawa is located in the greater Sudan landscape and is an eastern suburb of the regional capital Maradi . The other neighboring communities of Djiratawas are Saé Saboua in the north, Tchadoua in the east, Dan-Issa and Madarounfa in the south and Safo in the southwest. The municipality is divided into 55 administrative villages, 27 hamlets, 20 camps. The main town of the rural community is the administrative village of Djiratawa (also: Djirataoua).

history

The French colonial administration established a canton in Djiratawa in 1944 . The rural community of Djiratawa emerged from the canton of Djiratawa in 2002 as part of a nationwide administrative reform.

population

At the 2001 census, Djiratawa had 54,359 inhabitants. At the 2012 census, the population was 85,976. The administrative village of Houdel in the municipality of Djiratawa is a traditional center of the Azna .

Economy and Infrastructure

The community is located in a zone where rain-fed agriculture is practiced. Sorghum , cotton , corn , cassava , okra , allspice and moringa are grown from May to November, and wheat , onions , peanuts , sweet potatoes and cassava from December to March . The buyers of the cotton from Djiratawa are traders from the city of Maradi and from Nigeria . Grains, sweet potatoes and moringa are sold directly to end users in Maradi. National Road 1 runs through Djiratawa and is part of the international Dakar-N'Djamena Highway .
