Julius Theodor Schmidt (born June 6, 1814 in Wurzen ; † September 25, 1861 in Newport (Missouri) , USA ) was a German politician, member of the Frankfurt National Assembly and mayor of Wurzen.

Life

Schmidt attended the Princely School in Grimma (1827-1834), from 1834 to 1837 the high school in Wurzen and then studied law in Leipzig , where he joined the Old Leipzig Burschenschaft in 1834 . From 1841 he was court administrator , then until 1849 legal counsel in Wurzen. Around 1840 he became a member of the city ​​council in Wurzen, of which he was also chairman. From 1845 to 1849 he was mayor of Wurzen. In 1848 he became a member of the preliminary parliament and the Frankfurt National Assembly for the constituency 5 Kingdom of Saxony (Grimma) and belonged there to the Donnersberg faction . In 1848 he was also a member of the Second Chamber of the Saxon State Parliament . From 1848 to 1849 he was also chairman of the Fatherland Association in Wurzen. In Saxony he took part in the revolution of 1848/49 and became a member of the government committee to carry out the orders of the Provisional Saxon Government in Wurzen, which is why he was arrested, charged with high treason and imprisoned at the Wurzen fortress from 1849 to 1850. In 1850 he escaped from prison via Brussels and London to the USA, whereupon he was searched for and sentenced in absentia to 15 years in prison for high treason by the Wurzen district court . From 1851 he lived as a farmer in Franklin County and took part in the American Civil War in 1861 , where he was wounded and died as a result.

In Wurzen there is the Bürgermeister-Schmidt-Platz - as a thank you and as a reminder of the city's most well-known nationwide mayor.
