Bill Horvitz

William "Bill" Wayne Horvitz (born May 12, 1947 in New York City , † January 15, 2017 in Forestville (California) ) was an American jazz guitarist .

Live and act

Horvitz attended Thatcher School and Colorado College; after moving to San Francisco in 1967 he studied music at the Ali Akbar College of Music and also had lessons at Art Lande . He then continued his studies at New York University, where he obtained a bachelor's degree (“summa cum laude”) in comparative religion in 1986 . From 1978 to 1988 he lived in the East Village of Manhattan and worked as a guitarist in the local avant jazz scene. During this time he worked a. a. with JA Deane , Dickey Dworkin , Shelley Hirsch , David Hofstra , his brother Wayne Horvitz , Jason Kao Hwang , Phillip Johnston , Myra Melford , Butch Morris , Bobby Previte , Peter Kuhn , Dave Sewelson , Elliott Sharp and John Zorn ( Archery , 1981) . He also led the quartet Living With Apparitions and was a member of the new wave band The Public Servants . In 1988 he moved with his family to California and lived in Sonoma County from 1992 .

In the 1990s Horvitz worked in the Bay Area a . a. with Joseph Sabella , Steve Adams, later with Harris Eisenstadt , with whom he founded the Bill Horvitz Band and released two albums. From 2005 he worked with his second wife Robin Eschner in the folk duo Tone Bent and in the ensemble Take Jack . During this time he also wrote several compositions such as The Long Walk, dedicated to his deceased brother . He also worked in a trio with Scott Walton and Tom Hayashi ( The Skerries ), as well as in a duo with guitarist Jesse Boggs; he also worked as a music teacher. In the field of jazz he was involved in 16 recording sessions between 1979 and 2011, including a. also with Peter Kuhn and with Myles Boisen / Jon Raskin. Horvitz died in early 2017 as a result of colon cancer.
