Mark O'Leary

Mark O'Leary (* 1969 in Cork ) is an Irish jazz and improvisation musician ( guitar , composition ).

O'Leary initially wanted to be a drummer as a child . At the age of eleven he turned to the guitar; early influences were Louis Stewart and Rory Gallagher ; later he oriented himself to Terje Rypdal , Robert Fripp , Pat Martino and Derek Bailey .

O'Leary was trained at the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles after studying architecture . He played with Kenny Wheeler , toured Europe several times as a member of Paul Bleys Trio and played with Bill Bruford as well as with Jack DeJohnette , Peter Erskine , Joey Baron , Sunny Murray and Han Bennink . The release of numerous CDs, initially with a trio and since 2008 also with a quartet, has led to his international breakthrough. In addition, O'Leary formed the Underground Jazz Trio with Matthew Lux and John Herndon . He has performed in 30 countries and also performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival . He is considered by some to be the most technically gifted and innovative guitarist Ireland has produced.

O'Leary is also an electronic composer who creates soundscapes that can be described as post-industrial ambient and he is considered a multi-genre composer. He has also worked with Günter Müller and performed his contemporary classical compositions with the Cikada String Quartet .
