Stefan Pasborg (born December 6, 1974 in Copenhagen ) is a Danish jazz band leader, drummer and composer.

Life

Pasborg's mother and stepfather were ballet dancers at the Royal Theater in Copenhagen, so classical music dominated his home. He got his first drum set when he was a child, later lessons from Alex Riel , a friend of the family. He graduated from the Rytmisk Music Conservatory in Copenhagen . His teachers included Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen , Ed Thigpen , Horace Parlan and Atilla Engin . With thirteen like-minded people from this field of study, he founded the Copenhagen independent label ILK Music.

Pasborg has worked as a drummer with John Tchicai , Miroslav Vitouš , Ellery Eskelin , Tim Berne , Palle Danielsson , Marc Ducret , Anders Jormin , Michael Formanek , Tomasz Stańko , Carsten Dahl , Jesper Zeuthen , Ray Anderson , Alex Riel, Mikko Innanen , Rent Romus and Lotte Anker . Majid Bekkas brought him into his Magic Spirit Quartet (album of the same name with Goran Kajfeš and Jesper Nordenström). He toured as a musician through Europe, the USA and Asia.

One of his most important band projects is the Trio Ibrahim Electric (with guitarist Niclas Knudsen and Hammond organist Jeppe Tuxen). They release a new album almost every year. Another is Pasborg's Odessa 5 (with saxophonist Anders Banke, cornet player Jonas Müller, sousaphonist Jakob Munck, trombonist Mads Hyhne). He also often plays albums in a duo line-up, for example with Mark O'Leary . Since 2014 he has also played in the Trio Firebirds (with Anders Banke (sax, clar) and Anders Flipsen (keyb)); Their first album contains interpretations of Stravinsky's ballet music .

Awards

Pasborg has received the so-called Danish Grammy several times: In 2004 he was awarded the Danish Music Awards in the categories New Name of the Year and Jazz Discovery of the Year for the album Toxikum . For Pasborg's Odessa 5: X-tra Large he received the Danish Music Award in 2011 in the category Best Danish Cross-over Jazz Release of the Year .
