Patricia L. Barber (born November 8, 1955 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American jazz singer , pianist , composer , songwriter and band leader .

life and career

Barber's parents were both professional musicians; her father is Floyd "Shim" Barber, once a member of the Glenn Miller band, her mother a blues singer . Barber grew up in her hometown and closed in South Sioux City , Nebraska , the high school from. She studied classical music and psychology at the University of Iowa . In 1989 her first album was released under her own name ( Split ), but she only had her breakthrough with her third album on Blue Note Cafe Blue (1994). In addition to performing in clubs in Chicago, she then studied jazz education at Northwestern University, among other things .

Barber's music is characterized by singing in the lower registers and flawless piano playing. Her repertoire consists of standards, including rock music, for example Ode to Billie Joe , A Taste of Honey , Black Magic Woman and The Beat Goes On , and of her own compositions, for which she also writes the lyrics, which are demanding in terms of content.

In 2019, Barber was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
