history

The city was founded in 1828. The name Towanda goes back to the indigenous people and means something like "burial ground" in the Algonquin language . Towanda was originally a region with an intensive timber industry and there were several sawmills . However, when attempts were made to exploit the geologically significant, very natural gas-rich Marcellus Formation , which is located below the city and which extends widely under the entire Appalachian Mountains , after 2008, extensive drilling began in the region. These were carried out using the hydraulic fracturing process (fracking). As a result, road traffic through the city grew dramatically as construction vehicles, tankers, and heavy equipment traveled to the wells around the clock. This was received very differently in the population. While the hotel and catering industry assessed the economic upswing positively, a large part of the residents showed a negative attitude because of the noise pollution and unexplained influences on the environment.
