James Tracy Hale (1865)

James Tracy Hale (born October 14, 1810 in Towanda , Pennsylvania , †  April 6, 1865 in Bellefonte , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1859 and 1865 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Hale attended public schools in his home country. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1832, he began to work in this profession in Bellefonte. In 1851 he became the presiding judge in his state's 20th judicial district. Politically, he joined the Republican Party founded in 1854 .

In the congressional election of 1858 , Hale was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 15th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Democrat Allison White on March 4, 1859 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1865 . Since 1863 he represented there as an independent republican the 18th district of his state. Also from 1863 he headed the Committee on Claims . Hale's time as a member of parliament was shaped by the events immediately before the civil war and, from 1861, by the war itself. He died on April 6, 1865, just a month after leaving Congress, in Bellefonte, where he was also buried.
