Stephen Fowler Wilson
Stephen Fowler Wilson (born September 4, 1821 in Columbia , Lancaster County , Pennsylvania , † March 30, 1897 in Wellsboro , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1865 and 1869 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Stephen Wilson received an academic education. After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in this profession. He also held a number of local offices in his homeland. He later became a member of the Republican Party founded in 1854 . Between 1863 and 1865 he was a member of the Pennsylvania Senate . In June 1864 he took part as a delegate at the Republican National Convention in Baltimore , at which President Abraham Lincoln was nominated for re-election.
In the 1864 congressional election , Wilson was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 18th constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded James Tracy Hale on March 4, 1865 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1869 . During this time the civil war ended in April 1865 . The 13th and 14th amendments were also ratified during his time in Congress . Since 1865, the work of Congress had been weighed down by tension between Republicans and President Andrew Johnson , which culminated in a narrowly unsuccessful impeachment trial.
Stephen Wilson was a judge in the Pennsylvania Fourth Judicial District between 1871 and 1881. In 1884 he became an associate judge on the New Mexico Territory Supreme Court ; from 1887 to 1889 he was presiding judge in the fourth judicial district of Pennsylvania. After that he practiced as a lawyer again. He died on March 30, 1897 in Wellsboro, where he was also buried.
