Horabagrus is a genus of Asian catfishwhose species occur in the southern Indian state of Kerala .

Horabagrus brachysoma occurs in rivers and in the backwaters , while Horabagrus nigricollaris is only known from the Chalakudy River and the Periyar River .

features

Horabagrus catfish are 23.5 to 45 cm long and have a stocky body with a brownish color. The head is broad and flat. Its length is 25.1 to 36.9% of the standard length . The dorsal fin, which stands far in front, is short, high and like a flag. Their back sawn sting reaches a length of 20.5 to 30.7% of the standard length. The anal fin is long, the caudal fin forked. Their tips are rounded. An adipose fin is present.

The most striking distinguishing feature of the species is the dark, whitish bordered marking on the front body, which in Horabagrus brachysoma consists of a dark spot on each side, while in Horabagrus nigricollaris it is saddle-shaped and converges across the front back. While Horabagrus brachysoma is mainly green-yellowish in color.

Systematics

Horabagrus is generally assigned to the family of the spiny catfish (Bagridae), but has recently been increasingly placed in an independent family (Horabagridae) and, according to molecular biological studies, as a relative of the Asian glass catfish (Ailiidae) in the "Big Asia" group.

Danger

The species are threatened in their population. The IUCN classifies Horabagrus brachysoma as endangered (Vulnerable) and Horabagrus nigricollaris as endangered (Endangered).
