Edward Overton Jr. (born February 4, 1836 in Towanda , Bradford County , Pennsylvania , †  September 18, 1903 there ) was an American politician . Between 1877 and 1881 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Edward Overton attended the Susquehanna Collegiate Institute in Towanda and then studied at Princeton College until 1856 . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1858, he began to work in Towanda in this profession. In 1861 he was the legal representative for Bradford County. Between 1861 and 1864, he served in a Pennsylvania infantry unit that was part of the Union Army during the Civil War . He rose to lieutenant colonel. From 1867 to 1876 he was a bankruptcy administrator ( Register in Bankruptcy ).

Politically, Overton joined the Republican Party . In the congressional elections of 1876 he was elected in the 15th constituency of Pennsylvania to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Democrat Joseph Powell on March 4, 1877 . After being re-elected, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1881 . In 1880 he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Edward Overton practiced as a lawyer again. He also worked in the banking industry. From 1897 until his death on September 18, 1903 in Towanda, he was President of the Citizens' National Bank of Towanda .
