Naming

The place was founded in the 1840s. The village was named Lilienthal after the owner of a tavern with an attached dance hall . The first renaming took place in 1858. The village was now called Gilbert , in honor of Elias Gilbert, who had the original site parceled out and settled. At that time, the predominantly German residents were employed as farmers, skilled workers and small business owners.

After two fires at the beginning of 1902, the industrialists William P. Bettendorf (1857-1910) and his brother Joseph W. Bettendorf (1864-1933), sons of the immigrant Michael Betteldorf from Nohn in the Eifel , proposed their iron car business to the citizens to relocate from Davenport to Gilbert if the old Gilbert farm were given to them as the location for their factory. Donations were raised from local residents and businesses to raise the $ 15,000 to purchase the property, and the factory was relocated to Gilbert. In January 1903 the city, which at that time had only about 440 inhabitants, applied for the incorporation and another name change in Bettendorf in honor of the brothers, whose factory was of exceptional importance for the early development of the city. Until 1920, the Bettendorf factory was the largest railroad car factory west of the Mississippi and employed 3,000 people.
