The place was named after the interpreter and landowner Antoine LeClaire .

Le Claire is the birthplace of bison hunter and army scout William Frederick Cody , who became known as Buffalo Bill .

A number of river pilots and steamship captains settled in Le Claire during the 19th century. Most of their houses have been preserved and form the Cody Road Historic District , which has been included in the NRHP as a historic district since 1979 .
