Le Claire is located on the Mississippi , which forms the border between Iowa and Illinois. The city is located in the northeastern suburb of the city of Bettendorf .

The city center of Bettendorf is 15 km southwest, and Davenport is 23 km in the same direction. Other neighboring towns of Le Claire are Eldridge (25 km west-northwest) and Rapids City (on the opposite bank of the Mississippi in Illinois).

The Interstate Highway 80 , which is the shortest route from Des Moines to Chicago here runs through the west of the urban area of Le Claire and crosses the Mississippi toward Illinois on Fred dick Memorial Bridge . US Highway 64 runs along the Mississippi and forms the Iowa section of the Great River Road here. All other roads are subordinate country roads, some unpaved roads and inner-city connecting roads.
A railway line of the BNSF Railway , the second largest railway company in the country, runs along the Mississippi .

The place was named after the interpreter and landowner Antoine LeClaire .
Le Claire is the birthplace of bison hunter and army scout William Frederick Cody , who became known as Buffalo Bill .
A number of river pilots and steamship captains settled in Le Claire during the 19th century. Most of their houses have been preserved and form the Cody Road Historic District , which has been included in the NRHP as a historic district since 1979 .
