Lakewood is a city in Cuyahoga County in the US state of Ohio . It is located on the south shore of Lake Erie , immediately west of Cleveland , is 6.7 square miles (17.35 km²) and had (2000) 56,646 inhabitants, 93.1% of them white. The city is the third largest municipality in Cuyahoga County after Cleveland and Parma .
The urban area has an approximately rectangular shape, bounded by West 117th Street in the east, the Rocky River in the west, Lake Erie in the north and Interstate 90 Chicago – Cleveland in the south. It extends around 5.6 kilometers in a west-east direction and about three kilometers deep inland. The neighboring cities are Cleveland to the south and east and the city of Rocky River to the west. Lakewood is part of Cleveland's inner and therefore older suburban belt, which was created before the Second World War and is now fully developed.
Lakewood is a pure residential community and is characterized by dense, small-scale development. In the extreme northeast of the urban area, directly on the lake shore, there are a number of up to 30-story high-rise buildings with luxury condominiums from the 1960s and 1970s. Downtown is Detroit Avenue on either side of Warren Road. There is no industry worth mentioning; The largest employer is the local hospital with (2006) 1060 employees.
The area was originally part of Rockport Township and known as East Rockport. From 1885 the name Lakewood (German: Seeholz ) was used in view of the nature of the area. The place was founded as a village in 1903 and elevated to a town in 1911. The proximity to Cleveland and the construction of a power station (1896) and a tram line (1903) allowed the city to grow rapidly to over 40,000 inhabitants by 1920. In 1883 an oil and gas field was discovered under the city and was fully exploited within around 30 years.
