history

The first inhabitants in the area of the later Sterling were Indians from the tribes of the Arapaho , Cheyenne , Absarokee , Blackfoot , Sioux , Kiowa and Pawnee . The first whites to come to this area were trappers on their way to hunt beavers at the foot of the Rocky Mountains . At the latest when there was no longer any demand for the animal skins, however, they moved on. Stephen H. Long passed the region as one of the first explorers in 1820.

Gold discoveries in California in 1849 and ten years later in Colorado resulted in a significant increase in the number of people passing through, which peaked in the 1860s. The first non-Indian settler to remain in the area permanently settled in 1871 on an island in the South Platte River a few kilometers south of what is now Sterling. A post office was also set up here. In 1881 it was learned that the Union Pacific Railroad would expand its railway line. The residents of "old" Sterling assumed that as a result, a town would emerge near their settlement. An envoy was sent to Omaha , who offered the railroad 80 acres of land with appropriate rights of passage in return for a promise that a roundhouse and shops would be opened in the area. The rail company accepted the offer and Sterling began to develop in its current location just north of the first settlement. In 1887, Sterling became the administrative seat of Logan County.
