East Cleveland is a city in Cuyahoga County in the US state of Ohio . It is located immediately northeast of Cleveland , is 3.1 square miles (8.1 km²) and had (2000) 27,217 inhabitants, 93.4 percent of them black.

Located around ten kilometers northeast of downtown Cleveland, East Cleveland was spun off from the township of the same name in 1895. With the rail connection through Nickel Plate Road , the city grew very quickly after the turn of the century. In 1920 it already had over 27,000 inhabitants. In the 1960s began a strong migration movement; the originally white population moved away while more and more blacks moved in. In 1984, East Cleveland was one of the largest cities in the region, with a majority black population.

For the past several decades, East Cleveland has struggled with financial difficulties. The city has been under forced administration since 1988, and in 2003 property tax of $ 7.8 million was outstanding, half of all income.

1955 went with the Red Line a rapid transit between East Cleveland and Cleveland in operation. There are two stations in the city, Louis Stokes Station at Windermere and Superior. There is also an express bus route to Cleveland and a number of bus routes to the surrounding communities.

The largest local employer is the Nela Park administration and research center of General Electric's Lighting Division with around 1,200 employees.

East Cleveland is part of the outer section of Euclid Avenue , which was dominated by numerous feudal estates from 1860 to around 1920 and was therefore also known as "Millionaire's Row". John D. Rockefeller lived in one of the houses .
