Chickaloon is a census-designated place (CDP) in Matanuska-Susitna Borough in Alaska in the United States .
geography
The area is northeast of Sutton . The western boundary is on the Kings River and the eastern boundary is on Purinton Creek . The Talkeetna Mountains are to the northwest and the Chugach Mountains and Matanuska River are to the southeast. The Chickaloon River and the Kings River are the two main tributaries of the Matanuska River. There are several lakes in the area .
history
The local natives of Ahtna - and Dena'ina - Athabaskan toured the area to the Copper River and Cook Inlet . The Chickaloon River was named after Chief Chiklu, the last Denai'ina chief in the area. In 1898 a coal field was discovered near the Chickaloon River. When the Alaska Railroad moved a track to the coal fields, the US Navy organized coal mining in the area from 1915 to 1922. In 1925, the Navy stopped mining. The land was released for settlement in 1958.

There are a few lodges in the area that provide accommodation for residents and travelers. Many residents work in Palmer , Wasilla , Anchorage or North Slope . Chickaloon is accessible by the state highway system and local roads. There are several private runways in the area.

At the time of the 2000 census ( US Census 2000 ) Chickaloon CDP had 213 inhabitants on a land area of 205.7 km². The mean age was 43.8 years (US national mean: 35.3 years). The per capita income (engl. The per capita income ) amounted to US $ 14,755 (national average of USA: US $ 21,587). 2.8% of the population had their income below the poverty line (US national average: 12.4%). 46.0% of the population are of Irish , 23.0% Italian and 20.7% German descent.
