Betrayal at House on the Hill is one of Avalon Hill misplaced board game . Players begin as a group of allied adventurers trapped in a haunted house and begin to explore the randomly landscaped rooms of the dangerous property. They are exposed to all kinds of creepy events and discover mysterious objects. Each character has four different attributes that can change due to events in the game. During the game, so-called omen, the indications that one of the players is a traitor are condensed .
At a certain point in the game, the traitor is revealed and the game enters a new phase called the haunted . The traitor and the remaining adventurers, now called heroes, are given different tasks that are selected from fifty different scenarios using a decision algorithm. The heroes' goal is mostly to thwart the traitor's plan, while the traitor usually has to kill all heroes. The exact tasks are described in the respective mission for both sides, whereby the respective opposite side only partially knows the task of their opponent.
Each scenario offers a different background such as a zombie attack , Frankenstein's monster, an alien invasion , an opening gate to hell or an evil cult.
Betrayal at House on the Hill won the Gamers Choice Award for Best Board Game in 2004 .
The game was initially only published in English. The first edition is out of print; a second appeared in October 2010.
In October 2016, the first expansion Betrayal at House on the Hill: Widow's Walk was released . It contains the top floor, new markers, items, events and omens as well as 50 other spooks. The game will appear in German for the first time in October 2019. Asmodee Germany is responsible for sales.
