Afognak Island is a 1,812 km² island in the Pacific off the south coast of Alaska ( USA ). It is located in the Kodiak Island Borough , 3 miles north of Kodiak Island .
As the second largest island in the Kodiak archipelago , it is located south of the Schelichow Strait , which separates the island from the mainland. The highest point on the island is 776 m. 169 people (as of 2000) live on it, mostly lumberjacks, fishermen and a small Russian Orthodox community. The island is 69 km long and 37 km wide.
The densely forested island is home to many brown bears , moose and elk , and was in the 19th century a center of Russian fur trade. Many tourists come to Afognak to fish and hunt .
The island was assigned to the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge in 1980 by the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act .
