Whale Island is an island in the Kodiak Archipelago in Alaska in the United States . It lies between Kodiak Island and Afognak Island . The strait between Kodiak Island and Whale Island is called the Whale Passage, and that between Afognak Island and Whale Island is called Afognak Strait . To the west of the island is Raspberry Island and to the east is Spruce Island . The island is 39.24 km² and uninhabited. The Russians also called the island Os (trov) Govorushechiy ili Kitoy in Russian-American times , which means something like Red-footed Gull Island .
