Marmot Island is the easternmost island of the Kodiak Archipelago in the Gulf of Alaska in Alaska , United States of America . The island is assigned to the Kodiak Island Borough and is right next to Afognak Island . It is 45.20 km² and uninhabited.
The island got the name Marmot Island , which translates as "marmot island", from the numerous ground squirrels that live on it . The misunderstandable island name goes back to a translation error by American cartographers from the Russian name “Yevrashka” for ground squirrel into English.
