The Kodiak Archipelago is a small group of islands south of mainland Alaska , USA .

The archipelago is about 405 km south of Anchorage in the Gulf of Alaska , separated from the Alaska Peninsula by the Shelichov Strait . It is 285 km long and 108 km wide. The main island of the archipelago is Kodiak Island . The second largest island is Afognak , about 5 km north of Kodiak Island. Shuyak Island is a little further north . It has many deep bays and is a nature reserve. South of Kodiak are the islands of Tugidak and Sitkinak . Other islands in the archipelago are the Barren Islands in the north, the Tschirikow Island and the Semidi Islands group in the south and many other small islands within sight around the main island of Kodiak Island. The archipelago has a total of 13,890 km² of land, 40 smaller glaciers, countless rivers and hundreds of terrestrial and aquatic species.

The Kodiak Island Borough encompasses the entire Kodiak Archipelago and a narrow strip of the mainland. Large parts of the archipelago are part of the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge .
