The Tschirikow Island ( English Chirikof Island ) is a 114.7 km² island in the Pacific off the south coast of Alaska ( United States ). It belongs to the Kodiak Island Borough and is located 290 km southwest of Kodiak Island .
As part of the Kodiak Archipelago , the unforested, 18 km long and 11 km wide island is located south of the Alaska Peninsula . The highest point is at 300 m . The Tschirikow Island is currently uninhabited, but tools have been excavated on it, the age of which has been dated to around 4,200 years. A cattle ranch on the island was abandoned in 2000.
The island was discovered in 1741 by the Russian navigator Alexei Ilyich Tschirikow and named after him in 1798 by the English explorer George Vancouver .
In 1980, the United States Congress incorporated Tschirikow Island into the Alaska Maritime Wildlife Refuge with the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act .
