Spruce Island is an island in the Kodiak Archipelago in Alaska in the United States . It is located northeast of Kodiak Island , only separated from it by the Narrow Strait . The island is 46.07 km² and is home to 242 people (as of 2000), almost all of whom live in the only village of Ouzinkie .
Between 1808 and 1818, Spruce Island was the home of the hermit Hermann of Alaska , a saint of the Russian Orthodox Church and patron saint of the Russian Orthodox Church in America. There is a shrine and pilgrimage site dedicated to him on the island.
